Jim grew up in Des Moines, Iowa, and attended the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, Nebraska, where he received his Bachelors of Science in Architectural Studies in 1996. A year before graduating, he went to work for a full-service firm in Lincoln, where he was introduced to all aspects of architecture, landscape architecture, and interior design, as well as mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and structural engineering.

In 1997, Jim moved to Dallas, Texas, where he began working as a Job Captain with a firm recognized nationally as a leader in the planning, design and structural engineering of educational facilities. While expanding his role as Lead Designer in the K-12 and higher educational markets, Jim spent 12 years working  on many award-winning projects recognized by the Texas Association of School Administrators/Texas Association of School Boards, the Council of Educational Facility Planners International, and Texas Architect Magazine.
